If you are looking for something with a
quiet temperament, a good mind Sometimes people don't see a horse on the "Beginner's" page, but they like the horse. Call and talk to us about the horse, I don't always keep this page up to date. Sometimes horses are put on the website when they first come in, but we don't always put them on the Beginner's page until we have had a good chance to evaluate them with different riders. After they are evaluated more, we like them for beginner horses, but I forget to copy and put them on this page. BEGINNER HORSES ~ OR "BOMBPROOF" HORSES Every good horseman HATES the term "bombproof" because horses are living things and nothing is "bomb-PROOF!" That being said, we do our best to find horses as close to that as we can. Out of 10 nice horses we have, at at least 8 are too side sensitive to carry a rider who hangs on with his lower legs, or rides in "happy frog" position of hanging on with the heels. They will pick up speed with a beginner rider, just because they think the heels indicate they should go. They are nice, they are solid, they have no vices, but they are not SAFE for a beginner beginner to ride, to learn on, or to take home without supervision. Some of these would work if they were in a training barn, where someone with knowledge can catch and correct mistakes, or where someone can jump in and set the rules when the horse tries to take advantage of the beginner...because lets face it...the HORSE knows more about horses than the beginner does, and that fact becomes apparent (to the horse at least) very soon after the two are left alone together! Most of the time we recommend lazy horses for beginners. They are slow and quiet. If the rider can't ride or is timid, they stop. This is MUCH better than running off!! Eventually a rider will get frustrated and mad, and will become assertive....they forget to be timid and they start to exert some authority. Also, since the horse isn't moving, they feel confident...this is just what you WANT them to feel!! When they get assertive, the horse moves, and a lazy horse will keep moving to the level of forcefulness on the part of the rider. It may be a lot of work, but it TEACHES a lot, without danger, and again, a lazy horse will never run off! Every couple of dozen horses, we find one that just genuinely LIKES beginners, or kids, and is willing to work with them. These rare finds will be careful and quiet with children or beginners, but they are not basically lazy, so they will move to the level they feel it is safe for their rider. They go willingly, but they stop willingly and carefully and they are good at reading whether the heels in are for the balance of the rider, or because the rider not only WANTS to go, but is capable of staying there! Everyone WANTS these horses and they are hard to find, so they aren't cheap no matter what they look like!! We are lucky right now to have a GOOD SELECTION of these horses right now. Sugar, Selene and Dogwood are that really RARE combination of quiet horses that have enough athletic ability to jump well, and they will teach and pack their riders. Bombay is a beautiful sporthorse, and Draper are two gelding that will do the same thing! Floyd, Jingo, Titan and Montgomery are quiet geldings who will work quietly and carefully for any level rider, but move on when they are asked, and Vera is a GREAT mare who has been very successful in camps doing just that! I think this is more of this type of horse than we have ever had at one time before.
Our videos are shot for each horse when a video is ordered, so it may take a few days to get it. They are uninterrupted, run about 20 minutes, and start with the saddling. They show the horse at all gaits, and whatever else the horse is capable of. You may request particular attention to something which concerns your needs, just make a note of it on the order form or email us. Videos are now send in DVD format unless VHS is requested.
Codies Tuff Bar Taff, (Michi) 10 years, 14.2h Pretty tri-colored bay paint has great markings and lots of color. He rides quiet in the ring or on the trail and we used him in camp this summer. He can be used for lessons or just riding out alone or with friends. He is old enough to have good sense, but has years of good work left in him. Big body and a quiet mind, this guy can be a family horse, a kids' pony or carry a good size adult. Jericho, 8 years, 15h They don't come any prettier than this. AQHA papers are unavailable, but the quality is still there. Big body, huge hip, Jericho will look good in the ring or on the trail. He neck reins and rides quiet with both leads and good gaits. Jericho has done a lot of overnight rides with Doyle, the horse he has lived with for the last five years. Doyle, 12 years, 15.2h This horse would look FANTASTIC English and we are going to teach him to jump. He's a pretty mover and works very quietly. Some of the photos of him didn't turn out well, I have a new camera and am still trying to get the settings right, but you can get the idea. He neck reins, has a jog and a faster trot, takes both leads and has a good attitude. SEE GELDINGS PAGE FOR PRICING!BUY A VIDEO OF THIS HORSE, price refundable with any horse purchase
Tessa, 15 years, 13.2h What a hoot! This little gal is as broad as she is tall!! She has been used as a 4-H pony and done a lot of trail rides. She rides western and English and is a willing worker, but will never run off with a child. Her body size is broad enough to carry an adult rider, she looks like a little draft cross!! She was suppose to jump, but she needs a refresher course. We'll get some photos when we get her going again. She has a little age on her, but that just means she has some sense! She will go for another ten years at least, and she'll carry the kids anywhere you want to let them go. SEE MARES PAGE FOR PRICING! BUY A VIDEO OF THIS HORSE, price refundable with any horse purchase
Ingot, 6 years, 14.3h Ingot has been used as a trail horse most of his life, so when he came here, went into a ring, and rode one of those "English" saddles, he had an adjustment to make! But he made it with confidence and style and has been doing the camp thing since he got here. Unfortunately, it has been raining EVERY night this week and the pastures are flooded with red mud and Ingot does enjoy a good roll!! We need to give him a good bath and then take photos because he really does have beautiful Palomino color and a great white mane and tail! He is quiet, but has a little more motor than some of our VERY beginner horses and he would PREFER a rider that didn't hang on with the heels, but he will tolerate it if he has to!! Low head carriage, good attitude. SEE GELDINGS PAGE FOR PRICING! BUY A VIDEO OF THIS HORSE, price refundable with any horse purchase
Cee Sugar Booger (Sugar), 4 yr old, 14h We bought this mare as a 3 year old, because we liked her style and temperament and we thought she would make a GREAT pony. We turned her out to pasture and rode her for the first time in six months and she just went right off. She is quiet and willing and will quietly carry beginners, but she is also athletic and a FANTASTIC jumper! She has a great eye, LOVES jumping and can use her shoulders like a champ. But drop her head and she will walk off down the trail, through water, alone or in a group!! She has a SUPER, flowing, flat kneed movement that will make her a standout in the ring, and she has the mind of a Quarter Horse and the size of a pony!! She is well broke and has no vices. Sugar has a quiet mind and would be perfect for a child or small adult who wants a greatShe's been bred, broke and trained in Pryor, OK, heart of good riding country, and all with the same owner. Floyd, 14.2h, 7yrs
Floyd is the best buy on the property. When he came here he had belonged to the same family all his life. They had his mom, they raised him as a foal and broke him to ride. The kids grew up and moved away, and he hadn't been ridden in almost a year when I bought him. He didn't know much, but he was sweet. He had never seen any place like a big barn, a stall, cross ties and the activity of a training barn...and at first he was terrified. But he has learned to work well, to wear a bridle, and now he frames up and looks good. These photos are all old, I need to get some new ones, because he really looks fancy, but he's a plain old country horse at heart. He rides well, likes people, works for any level rider, and tries to please. He's learned a lot and is very willing. He's been a trail horse his whole life, but he's learned to work in a ring. He'll stay inside, go out in a pasture, We used him some in camp, he is tolerant of riders stands well for mounting. He'll crawl into your heart. He isn't herd bound (He canters right past the other horses, they can come and go and it doesn't bother him.) and he has three good gaits. He's a little a great guy who enjoys his work.

IC Versary Lady (Vera) 14.1h, sorrel overo, APHA, 2002 This is a chance for someone to own a really nice mare at a very reasonable price. Big boned enough to carry an adult easily, she looks bigger than she is. She's just barely a paint, but has two spots that give her full registration. She isn't fancy, but she is SOLID minded and ready for what you want to do! We've used her in camps, we've used her on trails, she rides Western and English and carrys any level rider. She is one of those rare horses that is quiet enough for a beginner, but not LAZY, so she wouldn't frustrate those learning to ride. She is absolutely safe, has never offered to do anything besides be a great horse! Cheyenne Ghost, (Horizon) 2001, 15h Nice color, this mare has been let out and got her mane so matted that they just cut it off....too bad, she will look great when it grows back in! But the important point is that she rode right off like she was used to doing it!! Good mind, ridden on trails and in a ring. Beautiful slow jog, great head carriage and the patience of Mother Theresa! Horizon has been giving beginner lessons this summer and she is quiet enough for anyone. We've taken her down the road and through water and she goes anywhere you point her. We've been using the mare to lead horses in going down into the creek and over some rough trails. She'll go in the water and wade up stream. She is a quiet ride, has GREAT conformation, a good head, a solid pedigree, nice color, and a big, muscular build! Naturally low head carriage and gaits nice enough to show western pleasure. Solid and dependable meet pretty and gorgeous color!! What more could you ask for in a horse? This is a great mare and we've had her since May, used her in camps where she was a champ and had WAY more patience with the beginner riders than I do, she did her job every day and loved the kids. After camps were over, we leased her to an older gentleman and by last week we began to suspect she was infoal. A vet check confirmed that she was probably bred in mid-March, but we have not been able to get conformation from the former owners as to what she was bred to or exactly when. Therefore, we have dropped her price. If we can determine more about the breeding, we will keep it posted here. We may simply keep her until after she foals, keep the foal for the campers to play with next summer, and sell the mare at weaning time. There is a good chance the foal will be buckskin. Hoya, 9 years, 14.3h This guy is FANTASTIC! Beautiful blanket appaloosa, nice build, and one of the best, most sensible temperaments I've ever seen. We have more photos coming, but I wanted to get these up on the website. He will carry ANY level rider, timid or confident. He isn't lazy, but he will not run off and has some leg, but isn't side sensitive enough to be a problem for a happy frog rider. He is one of those rare beginner horses that wouldn't stall out, but will wait for what you want to do. Lots of trail miles, gone on some long trail rides, but will work in the ring. Baron, 14 years, 15.3h This guy is bred to be athletic. He's always been a trail horse an his owners just ran out of pasture and money to feed him. He needs some groceries, but he has a great temperament and enough miles to know what he is doing. We're going to teach him to jump and he will be a great kid or amateur hunter with a lot of miles left in him. Again, we have more photos coming, but wanted to get him up so people could see what a great horse he is. Buy him now and put the weight on him, or we'll teach him to jump and raise the price when he looks better. Theodore, 12yrs, 14.3h This bay gelding will carry ANYONE anywhere! He's been a trail horse and used with Elroy by a family that did a lot of weekend trail rides. He neck reins, goes on a loose rein, rides out alone or with a group and takes everything in stride! He has a big body and can carry any size rider. His temperament is like a loveable dog who just wants to crawl into your heart. The other day, Hannah and Kelly were up in the ring riding BACKWARD just for the fun of it!! He is smooth enough she walked, trotted and cantered...and my camera battery died!! I snapped a couple of pictures, but I have to wait until I charge the batteries to see if they came out!! $3200 BUY A VIDEO OF THIS HORSE, price refundable with any horse purchase
I somehow wiped out the information on poor Elroy, so here goes again!! This guy came in with Theodore. They have lived together and ridden together for years and they are both exceptionally nice horses. Elroy has been on overnight rides, he rides in the ring, has good neck reining and three good gaits with both leads. We are going to start him over fences, he has a great attitude and is athletic. In person, he is a very pretty color. He is technically a sorrel, but his coat is that "orange" color of a dun, but he doesn't have the stripe. The girls were playing up in the ring the other day, riding Elroy and Theodore while sitting backward and laughing so hard it is a wonder they didn't fall off!! He did all three gaits and stopped when they got too far off balance!! Both horses just put up with the silliness like they were babysitting!! Elroy goes where you point him and always has a good attitude.
Nile, gaited trail horse, 12 years, 15.2 If you want something that has been there, done that and can be counted on like a bank teller, take a look at this nice black gelding. He has the size to carry anyone. Excuse the lack of photos. We had camera problems and only two of the dozen or so photos turned out. We promise to take more if he is still around.
